Another Christmas down, a New Years to go. 2012 is almost here!
The four shining stars of Christmas this year are of no surprise. A shared 1st/2nd place of course goes to our two nieces Jaina & Elise (duh;) with the BOBULKI & pierogis taking a close 3rd/4th. I said it yesterday before leaving Easton, you shouldve just rolled us back on 78East to NYC. It probably wouldve worked even if I crunched along the highway the entire time, my pockets full of those pretzel/hersheykiss/pb m&m treats. Delish. We joked that after 10min of a food sesh our stomachs were grumbling for more. It's indulgant and ridiculous and just what Christmas Eve is in this family that I married into. And I love it. Wigilia was a bit of a smaller function this year as A & I are in Asia honeymooning away and less extended family able to make the drive, but the laughter and stories that filled the air were the same as ever. Merry Christmas wishes passed as the oplatki was broken. The candles lit in reflection of the occasion at hand. And carols (though less this year than others) filled the house between courses of Polish nosh. Jaina's reaction to the table and chairs (that Nana/Marlene purchased and spent so many hours perfecting) was hands down the present of the evening as she gasped in toddler wonderment over the dining set just her size, just for her. At any moment possible, I swooped baby Elise into my arms (who doled out smiles left and right) whenever possible, enjoying the happiness that babies bring to family gatherings. Toasts made to all sorts of sentiments that night. The biggest owed to Mike & Marlene who've made Wigilia such a standing tradition.

2 years ago (on Oct 30th), Lee snuck me up the UWS for a walk through Central Park before dinner(*I had been begging for weeks to get him up there with me as I spent so many weekends running 5Ks in the gorgeous fall foliage.) It was a Friday night, and the weather had officially turned to brisk/cold anything but indian summer October. Walking along the path from the Columbus Circle entrance to the park to Sheeps Meadow will be one of the most memorable strolls of my life. I remember those classic CP bridges we crossed as we would stop and take in the moment. The makings of a perfect fall date....(little did I know;) So while we still have a month + a few days to go until our actual anniversary, the last week of October will always hold a special place in my heart. Swept off my feet and surprised in a way that I will never, ever forget. We celebrated our engagement anniversary last year with the most amazing fall tasting menu @ Telepan on W 69th. We talked about that meal all year to any friends that would listen! ("and the acorn squash, red snapper with beets and lobster puree and cauliflower soup, ah, you just have to go!") And as we walked into Telepan last night, I immediately thought: I love this tradition. Maybe for our actual anniversary we will stay in and cook and watch our wedding video and just be. But our engagementversary will always be this. A night out. Fall food. Pumpkin ice cream sunday. Lee reflecting on how nervous he was when he picked up my ring. And me gushing about how life ever since that moment has only gotten better and better:) PS: I do the majority of my restaurant reservation booking on OpenTable.com. They have a special comments section upon making your reservation and I thought, oh what the heck, "This meal will celebrate the 2nd anniversary of our engagement, we love Telepan!" And voila. "Happy Anniversary" en chocolate on our plates. It's the little things :)
