Today, I put Morgan down for some tummy time on the bed and cheered her on as she held herself up on her forearms for 10s of seconds. Just a simple mama and daughter moment. I flipped her onto her back when we were done and let her gurgle and coo with delight, maybe happy with herself too...maybe just growing up too fast before my eyes. We log so many of these small milestones every day that sometimes it's hard to see how much she's changing on the bigger scale. Was it not just 10weeks ago that we brought home our brand new babe home from he hospital? Walking this evening along the water with M in the Bjorn, I looked down at her taking in the world with such determination and focus. Everyone that sees her these days comments on that strong gaze that it's almost becoming her most definitive trait!
Baby girl, you are growing up before my eyes and it is such a treat to be right there beside you... Ps: how serious does my girl look in this photo!?! Haha! I have an unreasonably high degree of anticipation for doing the following to/with Morgan: giving her a wedge of a lemon (haha!), tasting ice cream/chocolate/cake, and playing at the beach.
Yesterday, we (sortof) checked off the last one by dipping Morgan's toes into the ocean at Siesta Key beach here in Sarasota. We went just before sunset and although the clouds had rolled in for the day, we loved showing our little one the talcum powder white sand and blue waves this shore provides. She was a bit skeptical at first but humored us as the tiny waves splashed on her feet and onto her jeggings...and boy did she LOVE everything about the sea breeze on her little face. Many more of these kinds of beach adventures to come down the road. I only hope Morgan finds the ocean and sand as calming and relaxing as Lee & I do. A place to be reflective as you stand at the water's edge...a haven for fun and family memories just waiting to be made. KCS instilled some amazing "baby whisperer" tactics on me during her stint in Sarasota for our naptime routine with Morgan and it has not only payed huge (sleep!) dividends for us during the day but also at night! For little ones, the better they sleep during the day the better they do at night...and Morgan is textbook when it comes to this. (Sleep begets sleep, remember?)
But enough rambling...the point of this 3:09am post is to say: My daughter slept 9hrs just now (6pm-3am). I just nursed her and the peanut is right back to sleep. (insert all the middle of the night excitement any mama can understand!!!) In the fall of 2009, Kristin came up to visit for her yearly NYC fall getaway and to say we painted the town red would be an understatement. (Gansevoort, roofdecks, tripping down the west village in suede stilettos covered in mole sauce...um, guess you had to be there.) We laugh with wild abandon thinking about that weekend over each catch up visit since then and these past few days were no different. Each armed with a baby girl of our own, we rolled our eyes at the fun of years ago and added these memories to the vault:a simple dinner of chick fil a (my first experience ever), calling it a night by 10pm (hello did I mention we both have little ones?), no makeup & ponytailed hair, and pretending to get tipsy on watered down spritzers. I mean, my oh my have times changed...but wouldn't change it for the world. Growing up and sharing in motherhood with your dear friends is this grand new chapter that really does just get better and better.
Thanks for coming to visit us KCS and CG! We love you girls!! Ready for the pool, Ma!
Side note: it took 20min to get this little lady in this suit, sunscreen applied, poolbag equipped, etc only to spend about 3-4min actually IN the pool before it was a bit of meltdown central. It's ok though...a first for everything! Waiting patiently for Lee and my Dad to arrive tonight :) Also, Morgan's reflux is totally in check with the help of Prevacid! We have a new baby who not only loves her sleep but is also so comfortable and incredibly happy. The gummy grin that that angel flashes me just takes me to a place of such intense mama joy. 9.5wks into life and Morgan is rocking it. We arrived in Sarasota yesterday afternoon!
Morgan was an angel from the point we got in the car to the airport and through the flight! I was a real sight to be seen making my way from baggage claim to the rental car counter with Morgan in the Bjorn, pushing a cart containing the diaper bag, luggage, and carseat while simultaneously pulling the stroller bag. I eveb got a few "well bless your heart for traveling solo" from some kind strangers and lots of folks who offered to help. I swear getting out of NYC makes the world feel normal in so many ways but mainly the way people randomly talk to others. It made yesterday that much better... Waiting on Auntie Kristin and Collins Grace to arrive from Jacksonville and then it's PARTY TIME;) Ps: this outfit is 6-12mo size! Holy leg rolls on this chicky! Two months old! You my girl are one infant with the mostess. In your second month, you became cool with life. Something just clicked. We clicked. A definitive change of course happened that Tuesday morning of your 7th week of life and from that morning we have just been on the up & up! With cheeks that go on for days, you've been growing like a weed and it makes me oh so very happy. At your 2 month visit you were 12lbs 12oz and 23.25" long...our little butterball ;) It's no surprise---Daddy and I were both chunkers as babies and you are following suit. I say to you almost everyday "I could just eat you up!" and smother you in kisses in those chin and neck rolls that everyone loves to comment on! You *barely* fit into your 0-3mo clothing, Carter's 3mo stuff fits perfectly right now, and in BabyGap/Old Navy you are in 3-6mo. 90% straight across the board and I think with your weight and age your kicks and grasp has become so very strong. You love to coo and talk to Mama on your changing table and hearing that little voice just makes me melt. We have long conversations back and forth about what we did that day or all the adventures we will one day take together. You LOVE moving your head back and forth scoping out all that you can see (you still love your black & white lambie mobile) and have created a little bald spot where all the hair has rubbed off haha! And speaking of your hair, I think it is just like Mommy's as a baby...lots of strawberry blonde fine locks. It's starting to grow in a bit, but for now you're rocking the bald dome. You've been going to sleep no later that 830pm (sometimes as early as 730) and will sleep a 5-6hr stretch depending on when you last ate. I'm still doing the dreamfeed most nights and I think it gives you a good buffer to only needing one true night feeding at 3/4am. You like to wake up around 615-7am depending on when your bedtime was. (I can't believe I've survived on such little sleep, I'm not sure I'd know what to do with 8+ hours!) My favorite time of day with you is still bouncing you to sleep before naps or bedtime. Watching your eyes get heavy and how relaxed you get when cradled in my arms is just the sweetest feeling in all the world. Your smiles are coming more frequently these days but you definitely reserve them for Mama the most (Or Aunt Sarah who you definitely thought was me today!) Bath time has become a favorite activity of ours and you have also finally become OK with the carseat. We were a little nervous for your first trip back to PA to see Nana & PopPop but you were a champ and loved the rumble of the car.
Daddy & I love you so much peanut. Tomorrow you and I are off to Sarasota for our first mama-daughter trip (Daddy & Pap are meeting us down there on Friday!)...sun, sand and a visit with lots of friends! What a start to your 3rd month of life :) My mama friend Jess passed this article along and while I'm never sure who my readership is from day to day, I do think there are a few neomamas out there like myself who would benefit from reading it.
"Get dirty. Get clean. Get grateful. Fall down. Stand back up. Do the work. Embrace the reward. Hang in there. Sleep when you can. Drink when you must. Hide a secret stash of Oreos. Pull up your britches and get on with it. Hang on tight. Let go when it’s safe. Enjoy the ride." -Katrina Anne Willis |
